Week of Oct 29 to Nov 2

Final week of the first quarter.  Hard to believe.  Seeing that I'm writing this on Friday with a potential hurricane heading our way (though I doubt it will have that big an impact on us), there is the need to say that, per usual, all plans are subject to change.

Chem-I:

Monday, Oct 29:  The COW for the week will be Zinc..... due on Friday.   We will be finishing the Density Determination lab and turning it in and beginning to review for the Unit 2 test to be held on block day.   Homework due Tuesday:   completing the Unit 2 Review problems.  Due Wed/Th will be your grade record sheet (+1 pt on qtr grade if up-to-date).  Due Fri:  COW (Zinc)

Tuesday, Oct 30:   Review problems due.  Continuing review.  Some folks will be finishing the lab.

Wed/Thurs:   Happy Halloween!   Grade Record Sheet due for +1 extra credit.   Test on Unit 2.

Friday:   COW due (Zinc).   We'll be going over test and double-checking quarter grade.

Chem-II:

Monday:   Finishing final unit presentation (14-1 group).   Covering phase change diagrams.

Tuesday:  Minilab on the sublimation of iodine.  Note:  Grade Record Sheet will be due Wed for +1 on qtr grade.

Wed:    Happy Halloween!  Lab on the heat of fusion for water.

Friday:  finishing labs/qtr grades.

Again....  subject to change and adjustments.

Week of October 22 to October 26

I have to admit that these couple of weeks have been tough for me with the altered schedule due to PSATs and the college trips.  I feel like I had to rush the introduction of sig figs to you guys more than I would like..... BUT..... you are still responsible for learning the concepts and skills that we employ in science for recording data and doing calculations with data.

OK.... enough of that.....  Here's the plan for the week ahead (note that this is aimed mainly at my chem-I classes)

I will be driving and chaperoning the college trips on both Monday and Tuesday.  Some of you will be out on Monday, some of you on Tuesday, and some of you not until Monday the 29th.  Please take advantage of the college visits as a means to begin/continue to focus on your post-GHS plans.

You will be required to complete a packet of problems on recording measurements using sig figs, identifying sig figs in data, and doing calculations applying the rules of sig fig.  Please refer to the info and rules on sig figs as covered in the Keynote (slides 15 and 16 I think) as well as our very quick lesson on "the triangle" problem from Friday.

Mrs. Durgin will be subbing for me on both Monday and Tuesday.  She has a very strong understanding of the topic of sig figs and can help you as needed.   I will be leaving answer keys to the problems for you to check your answers.

On Block Day we will be doing a short lab on density calculations where you will be applying all the concepts of recording data correctly, doing calculations correctly and calculating accuracy and precision of your results.

You will be having a skills test (probably a half-test next week (on Tues????) and, possibly a full unit assessment next week, too.

AS FOR CHEM-II:   you will work on your unit presentation on Monday and Tuesday and each group will do their presentaions on Wed during block (13-2, 13-3, 13-4 and 14-1 in that order).

Week of October 15 to October 19

Per usual, this is a general plan and subject to change.  Keep track of assignments on the assignment board in the class.

Note:  This week will be blocks on Tues and Thurs with PSATs on Wed (per 1 to 4) for Jrs and Sophs. There will undoubtedly be many admustments made during the week.

Chem-I:
Monday, Oct 15:   Due:   Reading and writing responses/answers to Unit 2 Keynote slides 4 through 11.   We will be talking briefly about last week's COW (Plutonium).  This week's COW due on Friday will be Copper.  We will be finishing lab reports and turning in reports.   Finally, we will start covering S.I. measurements (Metrics) using the Keynote.    Homework for Tuesday:   NONE?????

Tuesday:  (block periods 1, 3, 5, 6)   Continuing covering S.I. units.  Starting topic of Significant Figures in measurements.   More than likely there will be worksheet to finish as well as some other possible problems T.B.A..   Note that COW on copper due Friday.

Wed:   (7 period day with PSATs held periods 1 through 4).   Period 6 and 7..... plans TBA.

Thursday:  (blocks 2, 4,5,7)  Continuing covering S.I. units.  Starting topic of Significant Figures in measurements.   More than likely there will be worksheet to finish as well as some other possible problems T.B.A..   Note that COW on copper due Friday.

Friday:  COW due on copper.   Continuing with topic of Significant Figures in measurements (lots of in-class problem-solving is planned).   Note that there will be a "half-test" on Sig. Figs. next week during block periods.   ALSO.... Note that next week will be "crazy" with College trips M and T and an early release day on Thurs with parent-student-teacher conferences on Thursday afternoon/evening and all day on Friday (Oct 25 and 26).

Chem-II:

Monday, Tues, Wed:   Working on Section Presentation assignment (specifics to be give on Monday). Presentations due on Friday.

Assignment for Monday, October 15

Reminder:   due Monday, Oct 15.   Read through Keynote Unit 2 slides 4 through 11 and write responses/answers to starred (*) bullets.

Tuesday, Oct 9:    COW assigned (Plutonium).  Due on Friday.  Passed back Unit 1 test and went over.  Started Unit 2 (Q vs Q).  Assignment for Wed/Thurs block:   read and take notes on Lab Activity on Measuring Mass.  Possible quiz on this assignment and SSS assignment turned in this past Friday.

Wed/Thurs blocks:   Due:   notes on lab prep.   Possible quiz (may be moved to Friday....stay tuned).  Continuing with Unit 2 basics:  Accuracy vs Precision.   Doing lab activity on Measuring Mass.

Friday:  COW due.   Finishing lab as necessary and turning it in.  Continuing with Unit 2 basics.

Homework over the weekend:  TBA.

Chem-II:

Tuesday, Oct 9:  passed back test and went over.  Worked on assignment from chapter 13 on Kinetic Theory.   Probable Quiz due Wednesday.

Wed:   Homework from Section 13-1 due.   A quiz will be give titled "What happened to the can?"  We will be going over vocab and problems from today's homework assignment.
