Week of Feb 27 to March 3, 2017

Welcome back from February vacation!   March starts this week.  SPRING is coming soon.  The days are getting longer and the snow is melting.  Let's hope there are NO MORE SNOW DAYS!!!

As always, plans are subject to change.

AP Chem (per 1):

Tuesday:  Reading packets from Chapt 14 due.  We'll be going over the test on acids/bases from before vacation.  We'll be starting new Unit on Kinetics.  Covering basic mechanisms and graphical representation for rxns (H, delta H, etc....).  We will also be jumping into a "mini-lab" on factors that affect rxn rates.   HW for Thursday will be a fairly simple worksheet on rxn mechanisms.

Thursday:   Finishing lab (graphs and conclusions).   Covering reaction mechanisms, mainly dealing with rate laws, first/second order rxns,  calculations and problems with rate laws.   HW for next class is TBD.

Chem-I (per 2 and 4):

Tuesday:   We will be going over the subunit test on Periodic Table.  We will be finishing and turning in the labs on Predicting #40 and starting assignment from new unit on compounds.  Due Thursday will be Read/SSS section 7-1 in textbook and complete problems 3 through 10 on page 193.

Thursday:  Reading/SSS/problems due (see above).   Starting new unit:  Preview of Compounds, I vs M,  electronegativity calculations.  HW for Monday will be a worksheet AND doing pre-lab problems.

Chem Advanced (per 6 and 7):

Monday:  Quick Review for unit test on compounds.  Taking the test.  HW for Wednesday:  Read/SSS from textbook section 11-1 and complete problems on page 347 numbers 36 through 40.

Wednesday:  Tests back and go over.  Start new unit on Chemical Reactions:   definitions, symbols, skeleton equations, examples.  HW:  Worksheet on skeleton equations.

Friday:   worksheet on skeleton equations due.  Introducing balancing rxns (general technique and some shortcuts).   Many, many examples.  HW:  worksheets on balancing.  NOTE:  there will be a subunit test (big quiz) on Tuesday on writing skeleton equations and balancing equations. ALSO, due Tuesday:  Read page 302 (on Combination and Decomposition Rxns) and do problems page 331 Numbers 13,14 and page 332 numbers 15, 16.

Week before February Vacation

Anyone else getting sick of snow???  Wow.  This week will be Maroon Tues, Diversity Day (early release) on Wed, White on Thurs and Maroon  on Friday.  There's also the possibility of more snow late Wed and Thursday.  Yikes  UPDATE:   Diversity Day was postponed.  Wednesday will be a white day w early release.  Thursday will be maroon day.  Friday will be white day (assuming no snow day on Thursday).   New Update:  Thursday WAS a snow day, so Friday will be a Maroon day.

Needless to say, all plans are subject to changes and/or adjustments.

AP Chem (per 1):

Tuesday:   Test on Chapter 16:  Acids/Bases/Neutralization Rxns/Equilibrium

Friday:  (Tests back).  Starting to work on "vacation assignment" packet from Chapter 14

Chem-I  (per 2 and 4):

Tuesday:  Reviewing parts of periodic table.  Periodic table "game".  Covering history of periodic table.  Possibly starting lab:  Predicting #40.  There will be an open-note sub-unit test on Friday on electron configs, quantum numbers and periodic table on Friday.

Friday:  Sub-unit Test.  Finishing lab.  No Homework over vacation.

Chem Advanced (per 6 and 7):

Wednesday:   Finishing unit.  Reviewing for test.  See answer key to review problems below.

NOTE:  TEST will be the Monday after vacation.

HAVE A GREAT VACATION!!!

Week of February 6 to February 10, 2017

Wow.  What a win for the Patriots!  You folks would not believe how AWFUL the Patriots were when I was your age.  If anything could go wrong, it DID go wrong!!!   We're looking at a couple of days of potentially messy weather on Tuesday and Wednesday which may affect the plans for the week.

As always, plans and assignments are subject to changes or adjustments.

AP Chem (per 1):

Monday:  problems on Acid/Base Equilibrium due.  Going over these problems and formuas. Introducing ICE method of problem solving.  HW:  ICE problems to solve.

Wednesday:  Reviewing for test.

Friday:  Test on Acids/Bases/Neutralization

Chem-I (periods 2 and 4):

Monday:  Reviewing the basics of electron configurations, namely the 3 rules that govern filling.  We will be continuing with electron configurations by filling a numbered diagram and learning how to use it.  We will also be "coming back" to Quantum Numbers.  A worksheet will be assigned for homework.  Due Wednesday will be finishing worksheet and doing the following assignment from textbook:  Read/SSS section 6-1 and do problems 24 through 29 on page 181.

Wednesday:  Worksheet and book assignment due.  Starting last part of the unit:  Periodic Table.  Parts of Periodic Table.  Relationship to Electron Configurations.  Predictions.  HW for Friday is TBD.

Friday:  Finishing covering the Periodic Table.   Doing lab activity on "Predicting number 40".

Chem Advanced (periods 6 and 7):

Tuesday:  Going over molecular drawing worksheet (that is due today).  Covering concepts of polarity, dipoles and "like dissolves like".    We will be doing a set of problems regarding polarity in class and finishing for HW as needed.  There will probably be a quiz on Thursday.

Thursday:  There will (probably) be a quiz on covalent bonding, molecules and polarity.  We will be covering intermolecular forces.  If time allows we will also start Nomenclature for binary molecular compounds and simple organic compounds.   HW is TBA.  Plan on a test during our second meeting next week.
