Week of January 30 to Feb 3, 2017

The last few days of January are here.  February starts Wednesday.  The Groundhog checks for his/her shadow on Tuesday.

Here is the plan.  As always, subject to change and/or adjustments.

AP Chem (per 1):

Tuesday:  Worksheet on acid bases due (counts as pre-lab).  Doing a lab activity on titrations.  Lab will be finished and turned in on Thursday.  Any HW for Thursday will be TBA.

Thursday:  Labs finished and turned in.   Continuing with acid/base concepts (equilibrium, introducing "ICE" method of problem solving).

Chem-I (per 2 and 4):

Tuesday:   Reviewing QMM so far.  Covering Quantum Numbers and Electron Configuration Diagrams.  There will be an open-not Quiz on Thursday on QMM and Quantum numbers.  ALSO due on Thursday will be:  Read/SSS pages 133-135 and record the "Three Rules".

Thursday:   Quiz on QMM/Quantum Numbers.  Introducing Electron Configurations (3 rules) with examples.  HW for Monday is TBD.

Chem Advanced (per 6 and 7):

Monday:  Reviewing BI, TI compounds/polyatomic ions.  Covering names and formulas for common acids.  Taking a SubUnit test (Quest) on BI/TI/Acids.  HW for Wednesday will be a Pre-lab on Comp of Hydrates and the following:  Read/SSS pages 217 thru 225 and do problems page 220 numbers 7, 8 and page 247 number 46.

Wednesday:  Pre-lab and book assignment due (see above).  Doing lab activity.  Possibly starting structure and properties of molecular compounds/covalent bonding.

Friday:  Continuing with Molec Compounds/Covalent bonds.  Covering Coordinate Covalent Bonds, VSEPR theory.  HW for next week is TBD.

Week of January 23 to January 27, 2017

First week of the 3rd quarter and first week of the second semester.  It's already late January.  Hard to believe.

As always, plans are subject to changes and/or adjustments (especially if we happen to get a snow day on Tuesday.... See below).

NOTE:  Changes have been made after Tuesday's snow day.

AP Chem (per 1):

Wednesday:   We will be going over the take home exam.  We will will finishing and turning in the lab on acids and bases that we started last week.   There will be a book assignment on neutralization rxns that will be assigned in class on Wednesday and due on Friday.

Friday:  Assignment due.  Covering neutralization, normality, titrations with example problems.  There will be take home problems to do for homework.  We will be doing a lab activity on Tuesday.

Chem-I (per 2 and 4):

Wednesday:   We will be going over the mid-year exam.  The following assignment from text will be due on Friday:  Read/SSS pages 138 and 139 and do problems page 149 numbers 40 thru 42.

Thursday:   Assignment on wave characteristics due (see above).  We will be starting QMM and Quantum numbers.  Several in-class examples and problems.  HW for Tuesday: TBD

Chem Advanced (per 6 and 7):

Monday:  Going over exam.  Starting "Nomenclature" for inorganic compounds: Binary Ionic Compounds.   HW for Wednesday is to finish the Worksheet #1 on BI compounds and to read/SSS pages 257, 258 and pages 264 through 266 on the topics of polyatomic ions and Ternary ionic compounds pages.  There is a possible quiz on BI compounds and the reading on Wednesday.
Thursday:  Going over worksheet on BI Compounds.  Possible quiz (probably not).  We will covering Polyatomic Ions and Ternary Ionic Compounds and, possibly, acids and base nomenclature.  There will probably be a subunit test on Monday (details to be given out in class on Thursday).

Week of January 2 to January 6, 2017

Welcome back from vacation!  I hope everyone had a good time during their vacation and was able to spend quality time with family and friends.  Believe it or not, we have a short two weeks of class time before we have our mid-year exams.

As always, plans are subject to changes and/or adjustments.

AP Chem (per 1):

Tuesday:   returning several graded labs.  Lab practical "quiz' on making solutions.   Work packet on colligative properties to start after quiz and will be due on Thursday.

Thursday:  Covering colligative properties, mainly MP depression and BP elevation.  Starting to review for test.  A test is planned for Monday on Chapt 13, solutions.

Chem-I (per 2 and per 4):

Tuesday:  review of early models of atoms.  Review of Bohr models.  Lesson on "Bohr's Model: Beyond the Basics" with demos.  Homework for Thursday will be pre-lab questions for Flame Tests lab activity.

Thursday:  pre-lab due.  Lab Activity on Flame Tests.  HW for Monday TBA.

Chem Advanced (per 6 and 7):

Wednesday:  returning graded labs.  Starting unit on compounds.  Preview of "types of compounds".  Comparison of Ionic vs Molecular compounds.  Problems with electronegativity and predictions.  Introducing ion formation and predicting ionic charges.   HW for Friday will be a Pre-lab on Ionic vs Molecular Compounds.

Friday:  Pre-lab due.  Lab activity on I vs M (probably just solubility tests).  HW for Tues TBA.
