Week of Feb 1 to Feb 5, 2016

February!!!   Wow.  Groundhog day.  Vacation coming soon.  Crazy spring like temperatures. 

Reminder that Wed is an early release day, so block days will be Thurs and Fri.


As always, plans, assignments and due dates are subject to change/adjustment:


AP Chem:   period 1

Monday:   Finishing and turning in titration lab.  Introducing Ka and Kb concepts and strong and weak acids and bases (Bozeman video).     There will be a test on block day (friday).

Tuesday:  wrapping up with relationship between pH and Ka, which will introduce equilibrium concept and ICE technique.   In class problems.

Wed early release:   Reviewing for test.

Friday:   Test on Acids/Bases/Neutralization   (hoping next week to do another "official" AP lab activity).

Chem-I (periods 4 and 6):

Monday:  Review Electromagnetic radiation.  Introduce particle radiation and decays and doing demos with "real stuff".   HW TBA.

Tuesday:  Review and continue with particle decay problems.   NOTE:  there will be a quiz Wednesday on Radiation "stuff" so far.

Wednesday early release:    Quiz.  HOMEWORK DUE BLOCK DAY:   Read/SSS Section 25-2 and do problems 9 through 14 on page 808.

Blocks:   Assignment from 25-2 due (see above).  We will be continuing with Unit 4 and/or potential "leftover" lab activity from previous unit.


Chem-I Adv (per 2 and 7): 

Monday:   Finishing Frontline on Fukushima.   Reminder that Editorial will be due on Wednesday.

Tuesday:   Continuing with Keynote:   Pros/Cons,  What to do about nuclear wastes.

Wed early release:   Editorials Due.  

Block Day Friday:   Follow up activity to Editorials ("Town Meeting/Debate").   Finishing unit.   Fusion.  Starting (finishing?)  Manhattan Project video from History Channel.

Unit Test will be next week:   Tuesday or Block day.

Week of January 25 to January 29, 2016

Half way through the year.  Third quarter begins.  Still no snow days (sorry seniors!). 

I apologize for late posting of the blog.  I usually update the blog on Sunday nights, but the Patriots loss must have had such a dramatic effect that I couldn't muster the strength.

As always, plans/asssignments/due dates are subject to change.

AP Chem (per 1):

Monday:   going over midyear exam.  Finishing lab procedure on Acids/Bases.   Assignment for Tuesday will be finishing conclusion questions.  Note that book assignment for Wed will be Read/Notes pages 152, 153 and all of Section 17-3.  

Tuesday:   Labs due.  Review Arrhenius acids.  Covering Bronsted-Lowry acid/base definitions, conjugate acids/bases, amphiprotic/amphoteric.   Worksheet on B-L acid/bases (to start in class).  Due Wed will be Pre-lab for Titration activity (In lab notebook) assignment from p 152, 153 and Section 17-3, see Monday.

Wed block:   going over B-L acid/bases.  Covering neutralization rxns,  normality, titrations.    Starting the titration lab.

Friday:  finishing lab. 


Chem-I (per 4, 6):  

Monday:   going over mid-year exam.   Assigning "Radiation in the News" which is due Tuesday.  Note that Assignment from Chapter 25 is due on block day:  Read/SSS 25-1 and do problems page 802 numbers 1 thru 6.

Tuesday:  Radiation articles due.   Activity on "what do we already know about radiaiton:   the good, the bad and neutral".   Note book assignment due block day (see above).

Block Day:   Book assignment due from 25-1.   Staring Radiation unit Keynote with basics.   Possibly showing video on "Smart Bomb".

Friday:   Continuing keynote.  Electromagnetic radiation vs Particle Radiation.  Examples.  Demonstration.  Possible quiz on Monday on 25-1 and topics from the week.


Chem-I Adv (per 2, 7):

Monday:   Going over mid-year exam.   Continuing with radiation:  half-life concept.  HW.  Solve Half-life problems from KeyNote slide.

Tuesday:  Reviewing/going over half-life problems.   Covering Transmutation.  Examples. Problems.  HW for Thursday block is to Read/SSS section 25-3 and problems page 813 numbers 15 thru 20.  

Thurs Block:  Assignment due from 25-3 (see above).   Quiz on half life and transmutation.  Covering nuclear fission/nuclear power/TMI/Chernobyl/Fukushima.

Friday:  continuing with  Nuclear Power and accidents.

Week of January 4 to January 8, 2016

2016!!  WOW!!!   Only two weeks until mid-year exams. 

As always, plans, assignments and due dates are subject to change and/or adjustment.

AP Chem (per 1):

Monday:   Worksheet on Molarity and Dilutions is due.  Review solution strength and going over problems.   There will be a Lab practical/group quiz on Tuesday.  Also due on Tuesday will be study guide/worksheet on Colligative properties.  Note that Unit Test on Solutions is scheduled for Friday.

Tuesday:  Colligative Properties sheet due.  Lab Practical/quiz. 

Wed Block:  Finishing unit.  Colligative Properties problems.  Reviewing for Test.

Friday:  Test on Solutions (Chapter 13).


Chem-I (per 4 and 6):

Monday:  starting electron configurations.  Three rules.  Examples.   HW:  None?

Tuesday:  Continuing Electron configurations;  numbered Electron Configuration Diagram.  Examples.  HW:  TBA

Wed/Thursday block:   Finishing Electron Configurations and returning to quantum numbers.  In class problems/worksheets.  Quiz on Friday.  Also due on Friday will be assignment:  Read/SSS 6-1 and do problems page 181 numbers 24 to 29.  

Friday:  Quiz on electron configs and quantum numbers.   Assignment from 6-1 due.  Starting Unit 3E on Periodic table. 


Chem-I Adv (per 2 and 7):

Monday:   Intro Group Activity on topic of Radiation.   Assignment for Tuesday:  read/SSS Section 25-1 and do problems page 802 numbers 1 thru 6.

Tuesday:  Assignment from 25-1 due.  Starting Keynote Unit 4 on Radiation.  

Thursday block:   Continuing with Unit four (types of radiation, types of decays, examples, demos).   HW for Friday:   problems page 821 numbers 29 thru 32.   Possible quiz on Friday.

Friday:  HW due from page 821 (see above).  Possible quiz.  Video on "Dirty Bombs".
